Chapter 24 Drugs Profiles:

Digoxin (lanoxin)

Digoxin: Treats heart failure, Atrial Fibrillation (Afib) and heart Flutter. It is contraindicated in patient who are  hypersensitive. Contraindicated in patient who have ventricular tachycardia and Fibrillation.

Therapeutic Levels for digoxin is between:

0.5 and 2 ng/ml

Even though the therapeutic level is between 0.5 and 2 ng/ml, Levels above the Therapeutic range: (above 2 ng/ml are used to treat atrial fibrillation. Digoxin can be injected or given orally.

DIGOXIN HAVE A LONG HALF LIFE  Because of this long half-life, loading dose is given  to speed up the time taken to reach steady state.

IF taken Orally (PO):

  • Onset: 1 to 2 hours
  • Peak Plasma concentration: 2 – 8 hours
  • Elimination Half-life: 35 to 48 Hours
  • Duration: 3 to 4 days

If given Via IV:

  • Onset: 5 to 30 min
  • Peak : 1 to 4 hours
  • Half Life: 38 to 48 hours
  • Duration: 3 to 4 days
